Camp Cando – 2015
We will commence our preparations for Camp Cando 2015 which will run from 9th to 14th August 2015.
Camp Cando 2014
Camp Cando 2014 ran from 17 to 22 August. Our theme for the week was Pirates with Team Jolly Roger lead by Captain Hook (Helen) and Team Black Pearl led by Captain Jack Sparrow (Mark). We started the week with a treasure hunt through the woods and our campers found two treasure chests full of bandanas, eye patches and swords and captain’s hats. Our Arts & Crafts co-ordinator (Lyn) had everyone engrossed in making more treasure chests out of egg boxes and ships out of juice cartons. Everyone did very well and produced some lovely pieces. We took a break from our ships when we visited Drusilla’s Park near Alfriston and the beach/fun fair at Hastings. This year we also had a go at archery and everyone proved they were rather good hitting the target several times with a few bulls-eyes being hit. Obviously all the practice on their ships had not been wasted. Some of us chose to do abseiling instead to get into practice for climbing the rigging on our ships – a few fears were overcome and we all did extremely well. Our new Campers and new Counsellors settled in very well and the whole week soon disappeared into the horizon. It was very sad when we all had to say goodbye at the end of the week. Have a look at some of our photos in the Gallery section.

We are putting the last of our plans together for another fantastic year’s events from 17 to 22 August. After four torturous days the trepid explorers finally reached their destination after walking from Wallsend in Newcastle upon Tyne to Wallsend in Bowness on Solway over the Easter weekend. Mark Cocker, Carl Cocker, Mark Drummond, Steve Smith and Julie Matthews managed to raise a fantastic £6,000. Well done to all and hope all the sore feet and legs are finally better.
We are pleased to announce that we have received a grant of £4,000 from the Foyle Foundation to cover the costs of the accommodation in 2014. The Foyle Foundation is a privately run organisation that was set up to support charities within the UK. For more information please visit http://www.foylefoundation.org.uk/

Camp Cando 2013
Camp Cando 2013 ran from 17-23 August with 16 campers and 18 helpers able to join in the fun. What another fun packed week was had by all. We had amazing weather and enjoyed Woodland Walks, visits to Tropical Wings petting zoo and our infamous trip to Hastings where many of the campers and helpers enjoyed themselves on the rides. Our theme for this year was the Circus with teams of Clowns and Jugglers creating a great opportunity for lots of circus related arts and crafts and fun at our Big Top Bananza. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making this such a successful Camp. Have a nice rest and see you in 2014.
Camp Cando 2012
In 2012 Camp ran from 19-24 August with 14 campers and 20 helpers able to join in the fun. We started the week off with a woodland walk on the Sunday evening. We ventured out on Monday to Paradise Wildlife Park where everyone enjoyed the experience, especially the self-contained play area for children with special needs. Wednesday was spent on a trip to the beach at Hastings. Several campers chose to spend their time at the fun-fare with their helpers in tow. There was a few green faces at the end of the day! Others opted for a more leisurely walk along the beach collecting shells and pebbles, and free ice-creams being handed out by the local police department. Our other days were spent around Carroty Wood with activities including swimming, low ropes, outdoor games and a selection of arts and crafts. Our theme for the week was, of course, the Olympics and everyone enjoyed the Olympics team games with both teams winning gold! The week was finished off with a BBQ and disco on the Thursday evening followed by songs around the camp fire. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our helpers for their magnificient support during the week.
Changes in Administration
Our Chairperson, Trupti Mistry, stepped down at the end of Camp Cando 2012 and we are very grateful to Mark Cocker who has taken up this very important role. Mark will bring strong leadership to the role and ensure we continue to offer the most enjoyable experience to our young campers.
Our Camp Director, Liz Dack, resigned after an amazing 5 years to take a well earned rest. Thank you Liz for making it all happen. Her successor, Steve Smith, has a big pair of shoes to fill but has been involved in Camp Cando for 25+ years so takes this role on with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Julie Matthews has taken on the role of Camp Secretary and has replace Maryl Kahl after a fantastic few years at the helm. Julie has quite a job on her hands keeping us all in order but her experience as an Executive PA will ensure she doesn’t let us off lightly!
